It’s Not Too Late

Why Starting Your Garden in Summer Might Be the Best Thing You Do

gardening in early summer = quick results

I had a message recently from someone who wanted to grow their own veggies this year.
She had plans in March, a few seedlings in April… but then life happened.
Now it’s June, she wrote, and she was feeling like she missed her chance.

But here’s what I told her — and what I want you to know too:
You haven’t missed anything.

In fact, starting your garden now might be the best move of all.

Summer Is a Wonderful Time to Begin

We often think of gardening as a spring thing — when the daffodils bloom and seed packets appear in shops. But summer? It’s full of opportunity, especially for beginner gardeners.

Here’s why:

🌞 Warm soil = faster germination
🌿 Longer daylight = stronger growth
💧 Stable weather = less plant stress
🍅 Plenty of crops still thrive from summer sowing

So many delicious and easy-to-grow veggies can be planted in June and July — especially in pots or grow bags:

  • Beans (pole or bush)

  • Courgettes and summer squash plants

  • Cucumber plants

  • Chillies and peppers plants

  • Tomatoes (young plants)

  • Salad greens, rocket, parsley, chard

  • Radishes, carrots, beetroot, kohlrabi

  • Winter veggies sown at the end of summer give harvests in the cold and dark months

There’s still time for really great results. I promise.

And You Don’t Need a Big Garden (Or Any Prior Experience)

If you have:

  • A balcony with 4+ hours of sun

  • A few deep pots or crates

  • Curiosity and willingness to water…

…then you have everything you need to start now.

The Key? Start Simply and Get Support

What I see over and over is this: people wait too long because they want to do it “right.”
But gardens are generous. They forgive. They thrive with attention and care — not perfection.

That’s why I created my Beginner Gardening Course Small Space, Big Harvest — for people just like you, who want to grow food, but feel unsure where to begin.

And if you're looking for a quick win, beans are the perfect place to start.

You’re not late. You’re right on time.

Let this summer be your beginning.

With hope, sunshine, and a little compost,
Émely 🌸
