Home-grown vegetables during winter?

Yes, it is possible! Living in town and having a small garden extents the gardening season considerably. I myself grow vegetables all year round.

Of course you have to make sure you pick the right veggies. Which veggies can endure wintery temperatures? Well more than you might expect!

How about growing spinach, rocket and chard? Or winter lettuce, lamb’s lettuce and garlic? Also possible are winter purslane, Tuscan kale and carrots. Plus radishes and Pak Choi.

Isn’t that an amazing variety to have in your garden during winter and early, early spring? I think it is and I am grateful for the opportunity to pick fresh home-grown vegetables directly in front of my door every month of the year.

Of course in case of real freezing temperatures you have to give them a little bit more love. But because my gardens are small, that' is easy. Just throw a woollen blanket over them of the night or few nights that the temperature drops considerably below zero and you can have a peaceful night of sleep…😉 your vegetables will survive.

Curious how that looks like? Well I added a few pictures of my own garden in winter.

With patience and a bit of love you can grown your own vegetables all year round on your balcony or terrace in town.
