Il Centro Storico di Salerno

After a week of school every morning and homework in the afternoon, I'm really ready for an escape. Il centro storico di Salerno, here we come.

We start at the Cathedral: Cattedrale di Santa Maria degli Angeli, San Matteo e San Gregorio VII. Quite a name, but truly a showpiece.

Mateo and I had a little laugh … you know who is the patron saint??

"SAN MATTEO” !! 😂😂 We looked at his relics in the crypt but couldn't find any resemblance. 😉

What I find interesting is that inside the church is a tomb for Pope Gregory VII, the only pope buried outside the Vatican. Attempts were made to remove him and bring him to the Vatican. In vain, the population was against it.

Minerva’s Garden

Our second goal is to visit the medicinal botanical garden. The garden already existed in the Middle Ages and belongs to the Schola Medica Salernitana.

The founder Silvatico called it the Garden of Simples (herbs). Very interesting and a tough walk in different heights but very worthwhile.

Time for a gelato

Enough culture and walking for today. We’re of to what is said the best ice cream shop in Salerno: Bar Nettuno.

Oops, this requires some patience😂, but it's worth the wait. 👏 They have up to 40 flavours and I almost couldn't choose.😋😋😋
