On the road to Basilicata!

From Salerno, I drive to Maratea, our first stop in Basilicata.

This beautiful little town. The first settlements in the Maratea region date back to the Paleolithic era. And since the 15th–14th century BC the village is small trading center. Nowadays mainly known for the big statue of Christ, built of pure Carrara marble in 1965 by Bruno Innocenti, a sculptor from Florence.

When we arrived in the centre, our first visit was to a bar to quench our thirst and to use the toilet. A decent toilet, but no toilet paper! Fortunately, I always have toilet paper with me. I report to the owner that there is no paper and the answer is: “Madam because of corona there is no paper. You have to ask at the bar”!!!!😳

Ok, Mateo goes to the bar and asks for toilet paper and believe it or not he gets a whole pack of napkins 🤣😂. Who comes up with something like that. Corona??????

We explore the city, visit the little harbour and return to the centre. At another bar that is tiny with only two tables outside, there is still a table free. I order 2 cafè and 2 spremuta from a very nice gentleman and immediately ask if he knows of a B&B. Of course, signora, I'll make a phone call. What a service!

The owner is coming to pick us up.

The host is a big friendly guy, who appears within 2 minutes. One problem, … he doesn't fit in my car because it is too full🤨 and he has to show me the way because it is one way traffic and I have to make a detour.

Please wait. Drink your coffee at ease, I will get my car. Where are you? OK then, I will meet you there in 5 minutes. And yes. I chase his big Landrover. Parking is no problem. Up the outside stairs and we are standing in front of B&B La Giancarla.

What a nice B&B. A large bedroom with a pleasant bathroom, a small table, a kettle and an espresso machine. That's a nice arrangement. The centre is a 2-minute walk away. Piece of cake!

Next question, where do we eat tonight. I followed the advice and went to eat at Agriturismo La Tenuta Del Barone. This is definitely a must. Cosy accommodation, neatly laid tables, good food, good house wine and nice service.
